According to Bill, he's played the game before and he plans on taking the boards with them up to Baldwin.

The raffle was a great success and the proceeds of just over $300 will go toward equipment and building improvements at the practice field.

Thank you to everyone in the community who bought raffle tickets.  Also, the Rocket Football Program members would like to thank: Dave Sziede for making the boards and being a top seller of tickets and delivering the boards to Bill; Pat Sziede for making the tote for the bags, along with Primo & Becky Garcia and Halee Surach for selling tickets as well.
Well, after the Christmas break, a business meeting and a meeting I missed due to not feeling good, it is time to send out some Rotary news.

Sally Abrams was our 50/50 winner and used her windfall to purchase the Gold Box presented by Wilber.  Sally is now the owner of a collection of soothing, delicious and edifying items to brighten her days.  It is always fun to see what the Gold Box holds in store for the lucky winner.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Reverend Ben Lehew,  Ben spoke to us of  the work being done by the Simple Truth Training Center.

The Simple Truth Training Center offers a means of breaking free from the bonds of life controlling addictions.  These addictions could be drug and alcohol related, depression, gambling, sexual addictions, eating disorders or any other life controlling problem.  The Center offers a safe and structured, live-in environment designed to assist the student in overcoming the addiction and obtaining victory in their life.  No one is turned down for lack of funds and the only requirement is a willingness and desire to change their life.  Each student's program is individualized to fit their needs and is guided by counselors and staff that have all successfully made the journey to freedom.

The program offered by Simple Truth is also enriched and enhanced through cooperation with other successful programs in the area.  This widens the scope of fellowship for the students and provides the support and connections needed to obtain success.

Anyone interested in learning more about the program or interested in providing support for the Training Center can contact Rev. Lehew at Simple Truth, 166 S. Burney St. in Marcellus.  Their phone is 269.646.2097.

It was a real pleasure to have Rev. Ben speak to us and share the vision of providing assistance to those in need by encouraging means of love, grace, truth and time, and we thank him for taking the time to speak to us.

The Marcellus Village Council held a regular meeting on Thursday, January 10, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. Members present were: President Jody Schick; Trustees Burke Webb, Ann Simmons, Peg Dentler, James Thomas, Sr. and Michael Ludlow. (Prior to the start of the meeting both Schick and Thomas left the meeting to respond to an emergency fire call. Both returned prior to the meeting concluding and President Pro Tem, Peggy Dentler conducted most of the meeting.)

Some disturbing news was learned at last Thursday's meeting. Village President Schick informed council members she had received word that Bronson Lakeview will closing their clinical offices in both Marcellus and Lawton. The announcement took those in attendance and council members by surprise. According to Village Clerk Krista Jourdan the announcement about the closing was not due to financial reasons but that they are trying to enhance their services in Van Buren County. Following discussion the council voted unanimously and instructed Jourdan to send a letter on behalf of the council asking them to reconsider their plans for the benefit of area residents. Also included in the motion was the suggestion that notices of the clinics closing be put in the local paper and on Marcellus Michigan.Org asking residents to send letters opposing the closing to Bronson Lakeview.

Cass County Road Commissioner, Pete Fournier, was in attendance to discuss and inform the council of an upcoming "county-wide" millage proposal on the February 28, 2012 ballot.  According to Fournier who is the appointed chairperson of the Better Roads for Cass County Committee, the road commission is trying to prevent future deterioration and preserve the primary road system while the politicians debate the funding issues. He noted that roads must be treated regularly to prevent moisture from entering the pavement and sub base and to continue addressing the greater loads from heavier traffic and equipment.

The wording on the ballot: Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be imposed on taxable property in the County of Cass, Michigan, be increased by one dollar ($1.00) per thousand dollars (1 mill) of taxable value for a period of 5 years, 2012-2016, inclusive, as new additional millage to providefunds for primary highway, road and street purposes for the use by Cass County Road Commission and each city, town and village in the county? It is estimated that the 1 mill would raise approxiately $1.8 million when first levied in 2012. Additonal information can be found here.

Council members reviewed the village's blight policies and procedures and teams were formed to visually inspect properties in the village. Readers can review the policy here.

The council voted unanimously by roll call vote, to accepted a proposal from Curt & Paula Johnson to lease 25 acres of farmland, west of the village's sewer lagoon system, from the Village in the amount of $140.00 per acre for 3 years. Village Clerk Krista Jourdan will submit the agreement to the village's attorney for review and approval.

During Public Comment, Village resident Tom Dentler provided council members with a graphic description of two large, black, dogs that had attacked the families pet which had been tied to its dog house. Despite medical care the Jack Russell Terrier died from its injuries. In addressing the council Dentler asked what the council what would they have done if the two dogs had attacked a small child or an elderly resident walking down the street saying, "I don't know if the village has a vicious dog ordinance or not, but something has to be done."

Jourdan commented that the village does, in fact, have a vicious dog ordinance in place and as recently as 2011 the village's dog ordinance was being reviewed commenting, "Unfortunately, a vicious dog ordinance would not have saved your dog." Jourdan stressed the fact that when residents are aware of a vicious dog or dogs in their area they should get on the phone and call Animal Control."

The council also heard comments from Riley Dentler, daughter of Tom and Peg Dentler, regarding her feelings on the matter.

Other action taken by the council included:

Payment of bills in the amount of $12,370.42

The council voted unanimously to change their March 8, 2012 meeting to March 6, 2012 in order for council members to attend an annual Intergovernmental Forum as Southwest Michigan College.
Items approved on the Consent Agenda included: Approving - the Village Clerk and Treasurers Report through December 31, 2011; Department of Public Works Report for December 2011; Cass County Parks and Recreation Invitation for "Visioning" on January 30, 2012; Recreational Trail Memo from "SMART" and a golf advertisement from "Golf Michiana 2012"

The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.

The next meeting of the Marcellus Village Council will be held on February 9, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. at the Marcellus Village Hall.
